Gum Disease Can Steal Your Smile and Your Overall Health
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, can pose a serious risk to your oral and overall health. Gum disease is an infection that usually begins when plaque below the gum line hardens, irritating vulnerable soft tissue. Bacteria emitted by plaque, in combination with decaying food particles, can promote infection in the irritated tissue. Gums separate from teeth, and bacterial pockets form.
Left untreated, gum disease can destroy gum tissue and erode the bone in the jaw, often causing tooth loss. The bacteria that cause periodontal disease have also been linked to systemic medical problems such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes complications, dementia, and low birth weight.
At your checkup, Dr. Arian will inspect your gums for disease and provide the appropriate treatment and follow-up care, if necessary. Non-surgical gum disease treatment includes scaling, root planing, soft tissue laser and antibiotic therapy. For advanced periodontal disease that requires surgery, Dr. Arian may refer you to a trusted colleague.
If you haven't had a checkup in a while, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Arian in our dental office. He'll assess your total oral health, including your teeth, gums, and bite. If gum disease is present, Dr. Arian will help you arrest the condition, reverse the damage, and maintain optimal oral health.
